CLINICAL AND EDUCATIONAL ADVISOR
Karen Kovacs North, Ph.D.
Dr. Karen Kovacs North is a licensed clinical psychologist practicing in Santa Monica, California. Her clinical practice focuses primarily on the family, including issues between parents and children, enhancement of parenting skills, step-parenting and blended families, marital relationships, child and adolescent social interactions and behaviors. Her practice also includes testing and assessment: testing for learning and educational purposes, cognitive and intellectual testing, assessment of school-related problems, testing of personality and emotional problems. Dr. North consults with private schools at the elementary and secondary levels in the Los Angeles area.
In addition to her private practice, Dr. North is the Assistant Dean of the UCLA School of Public Affairs, where she is director of the undergraduate program and is a lead administrator for the three graduate programs (urban planning, public policy, and social welfare). The
School of Public Affairs houses UCLA’s social work (MSW) program, one of the best social work programs in the nation. Dr. North teaches and mentors at the undergraduate and graduate level, and has taught topics ranging from Psychopathology to Congressional/legislative Process.
Prior to UCLA, Dr. North worked in Washington, D.C. at the White House and for the U.S. House of Representatives. While working for U.S. Representative Edward J. Markey in the early 1990’s she was involved in running Congressional hearings on T.V. violence and video game violence. These included such issues as: education and mental health policy, crime and violence, V-chip parental empowerment and the effects of the media on children. At the White House during the first term of the Clinton Administration, Dr. North was involved in: education policy, learning disabilities and behavioral issues in schools, social and behavioral science policy, welfare and poverty, mental health policy, bioethics, and neurobehavioral influences on learning and development. She held a Top Secret Security Clearance at the White House.
